On the couch

Who’s On the Couch?

Since the era of our hotel’s namesake Abigail Scott Duniway, cultural boundary pushers have composed the fabric of a beautiful tapestry that is Portland, Oregon. The thread of her pioneering achievements for women’s rights and free expression still resonates today in our effort to support individuals at the forefront of progress.

With our #whosonthecouch social media campaign, we speak to the spirit of The Duniway by encouraging the city’s movers and shakers, tastemakers and game changers to snap a photo on our iconic lobby couch and share a few thoughtful words about their own passions.

12 Days of whatever you celebrate

  • The Duniway Presents Dominic Castillo (w/Jon Lakey on Double Bass)

    Dec 14

Playing live 8:30PM-11: 00 PM in the Duniway Lobby

What makes an indie artist stop penning rock songs to record a jazz album? Well, you could ask Dominic Castillo, whose now-defunct band, Ravishers, had a tremendously hooky song, “Keep You Around”, featured on a PDX Pop Now comp some years back. He would say insanity...but not his own.

“I think after the break-in, I just felt like mixing it up a bit,” says Castillo, who survived a harrowing home invasion in 2011. “There was a moment during the fight when I wasn’t sure I was going to make it.” Luckily for Castillo, who only sustained a broken wrist, some cuts, and bruises, he managed to prevail.
“That event gave me a little time to reflect and refocus. I’ve always loved jazz and jazz guitar. It’s a sound that’s always been in my head."

  • Fox & Bones

    FOX AND BONES

    Dec 15

    Fox And Bones

Acoustic Folk Music / Live in The Duniway, Lobby Bar

Fox and Bones are the modern day Bonnie and Clyde, if Bonnie and Clyde had driven a Volvo and played folk-pop music. Based in Portland, OR, these internationally touring sweethearts aren't your average duo. Rather than simply documenting their experiences in song, Sarah Vitort and Scott Gilmore write from the perspective of quasi-fictional characters. There’s Fox, a down-and-out it girl, and Bones, a rootless orphan bad boy with a heart of gold. The two fall for each other, decide to hit the road, and never look back. The characters, as well as their real-life counterparts, use music as the canvas on which they paint a new life together that defies traditional relationship roles and life goals. Their music is ripe with vocal harmonies that pull at the heartstrings and a complex, at times metaphysical, lyrical landscape. Each element serves their stories of a life lived on the road, in pursuit of a dream that most never have the courage to chase. Live, they give audiences a peek into their world and challenge them to believe in life, adventure, and modern love.

  • Silent Disco

    Dec 17

The Duniway, Welcomes Back Heart Beat Silent Disco

    6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

HeartBeat Silent Disco has been building community all around the globe for years and we would like to help you do the same. Whether you are renting our equipment for a private event at a location of your choice or coming out to our public events to meet new people and expand your family, we are here for you. HeartBeat Silent Disco is a full-service audio production company that offers an innovative solution for rising above the constraints of noise ordinances and less-than-welcoming neighbors. Rather than using traditional modes of amplification, we use high-powered transmitters to broadcast to an interconnected network of wireless headphones. This means that your concert/party/event will only be heard and experienced by those wanting to be involved and neighbors will only hear your HeartBeat.

Our state of the art 3-channel headphones allows for three silent stages to run concurrently with a broadcast range of 1500 meters in every direction. This means that your audience can alternate between audio channels with just a simple click of the headphones, and colored LEDs on each set light up to correspond to each audio source. Individual volume control on each set allows for each user to personalize their sound experience.

Lead vocalist and songwriter Melodie Ayres, in seek of a major life change, upended her Kansas roots this last summer. She packed her car and shoved off for the adventure of the Cascade Mountain range and the rich music scene of Portland Oregon. After months of playing open mics she accumulated a tribe of musicians and fans to support her dream. Lead singer Melodie Ayres plays the classical guitar while playing the kick drum. She is accompanied with mandolin, fiddle, banjo, upright bass and a percussionist. The Duniway Presents Dominic Castillo (w/Jon Lakey on Double Bass)

    FOX AND BONES

HeartBeat Silent Disco has been building community all around the globe for years and we would like to help you do the same.

    The Van Rontens

    6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

A fusion of Folk, Funk Grass and Gypsy Roots. It’s like a whole new sandwich. Or maybe Iron and Wine meets Modest Mouse with crystal clear female lead vocals. Now The Van Rontens have created a sound like no other and are touring the country changing perspective on life one fan at a time.
